Portugal

After falling to Morocco in a shocking turn of events at the World Cup, Portugal need to reassess ahead of these qualifiers. They genuinely have one of the most talented squads on the planet but continue to make the wrong moves, and speaking of, this is set to be the first competitive gam…

Gervinho a target for Marseille

Marseille are interested in signing out-of-favour Arsenal forward Gervinho, the club s assistant coach has revealed.

The Ivory Coast international moved to the Premier League from Lille in 2011, with Arsenal paying 10.5 million pounds for his services, but he has struggled to find form in England.
He could now be set for a move back to Ligue 1 after Franck Passi confirmed Marseille s interest.
This is a profile that interests us, yes. We want flank players, with dribbling, passing and scoring, and Gervinho has this profile, he told Le 10 Sport.
Gervinho, 26, has scored just nine goals in 46 appearances for Arsene Wenger s side.
However, he underlined his desire to stay at the Emirates Stadium at the end of last season.
I have a contract until 2015 with Arsenal and I intend t…

Gladbach youngster Hermann signs new contract

Borussia Monchengladbach have announced that youngster Patrick Hermann has signed a two year extension to his contract.  The 19 year old will now stay at the Borussia Park Stadium till June 2014.

Uchtelfangen born Hermann signed for Gladbach two years ago from FC Saarbrucken. He rose through the youth ranks and broke into the first team last season. During the second half of the 2009/10 Bundesliga season, he made thirteen appearances for Gladbach, who eventually finished twelfth in the league.

Hermann has also been capped by Germany at U-17, U-18 and U-19 levels. The contract also includes an automatic one year extension clause should the young midfielder play a certain amount of games for Gladbach.

Navas plays down World Cup snub

Spain international Jesus Navas insists he has no ill feeling towards Vicente del Bosque following his FIFA World Cup snub.

The Manchester City winger failed to make the final 23 for the tournament in Brazil and will miss out on a second World Cup.

Navas had been struggling with injury during the weeks building up to the squad announcement, but had regained full fitness.

However, Del Bosque opted to drop him from the squad along with City team-mate Alvaro Negredo, a decision Navas feels will prove to be the correct one.

It is a shame. I have worked hard to (to gain fitness) but it is the boss who makes the decisions and he always makes the right ones, he told AS.

He has done what is best for the group. The truth is that I have recovered and was geared up…

Neymar and Firmino delight Tite as Brazil start World Cup qualifying in style

Brazil coach Tite praised the performance of Neymar and was pleased at Roberto Firmino s contribution in the 5-0 thrashing of Bolivia.

Liverpool forward Firmino scored twice as Brazil opened their World Cup qualifying campaign in impressive fashion, despite having not played an international fixture in nearly 12 months.

Marquinhos and Philippe Coutinho also scored, with Bolivia not helping their cause with an own goal in the rout in Sao Paulo.

Neymar did not score but was influential throughout, the Paris Saint-Germain forward showing no signs of the back problem that had bothered him during the build-up to the game.

We seek knowledge, strategies, [to play] with harmony,  Tite said after the resounding victory.

Neymar was loose…

Germany 2 Netherlands 2: Dramatic five-minute fightback seals Oranje progression

Netherlands scored twice in the final five minutes to snatch a 2-2 draw with Germany and secure a place in the Nations League Finals.

Ronald Koeman s men had seemed certain to finish second behind France in Group 1 of League A when Timo Werner s first international goal since June and Leroy Sane s second in as many outings had Germany coasting.

Needing only a point to advance, Quincy Promes offered a late lifeline to the outplayed visitors as he cut the deficit in half before makeshift striker Virgil van Dijk completed a remarkable turnaround in the 90th minute with a volley.

The final result was an extension of Germany s annus horribilis as Netherlands rescued a dramatic draw to advance to the final four.

Blatter offers ´unconditional´ backing to Russia 2018

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has offered his unconditional support to Russia s hosting of the 2018 World Cup.

Recent reports suggested some European nations would consider boycotting the tournament due to the conflict in neighbouring Ukraine.

However, Blatter warned against such action on Tuesday, claiming that nothing good would come of it and comparing the situation to Russia s hosting of the 2014 Winter Olympics.

FIFA unconditionally supports the staging of the World Cup by Russia, he said. A boycott will never give any positive effect. We trust the country, its government.

Russia is the world s biggest country. You know, Russia is in the eye of the international media. Football cannot only unite Russia but show the whole world that it is stronger tha…

19-04-2010 Liverpool Vs West Ham

This should be an intriguing game between two teams with plenty to fight for. Liverpool will not have given up on the possibility of sneaking into the top four, despite their odds of being able to do that have gone to 16/1. West Ham are looking a bit better after the last couple of weeks but if they have a bad result and the teams below them get a result then they are right back in the relegation mix.

Rafa Benitez has had a torrid time this season and when you look at the investment in the squad last summer it is easy to see why. It is only now that top players Torres and Gerrard have been performing that results have picked up. It might be too little too late, and things will be that little bit more difficult now that Torres appears to be unavailable again.
